Organic veggie burger brand loses organic certification

Life Foods' Hawaii and Calif. ops now both suspended from Nat'l Organic Program

Hawaii-based Life Foods, Inc., makers of organic veggie burgers and tempeh, has been suspended from the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP).

The NOP’s Organic Integrity Database reported Friday that Life Foods Wailuku was suspended Thursday by Soquel, Calif.-based certification agency A Bee Organic, which was acquired last year by Castle Rock, Colo.-based Where Food Comes From, Inc., North America’s largest third-party verifier of food production practices.

The company’s California operations, which opened in Citrus Heights, Calif., in 2015, was suspended last month by A Bee Organic. At the time, the company said on its website that "Currently all our products are made at our production kitchen in Wailuku, Maui."

Life Foods Wailuku had been certified organic by A Bee Organic since 2014. In 2016, Life Foods opened two restaurants called Nourish Health Bars, one in Paia and the other in Wailuku.

A request for more information from the company was not immediately returned.
