Top organic artichoke co.’s new packaging aims for retailer convenience

Ocean Mist Farms says shoppers to start seeing new packaging next month

California Artichoke And Vegetable Growers Corp. dba Ocean Mist Farms, North America’s largest grower/shipper of artichokes, has rolled out three new organic artichoke packaging options.

Castroville, Calif.-based Ocean Mist had been growing organic artichokes since 2000. Today, Ocean Mist, which is certified organic by CCOF, grows organic asparagus, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cilantro, fennel, green onions, kale, kale (Lacinato), leeks, lettuces (green leaf, red leaf, romaine, head), parsley (Italian, Curly), spinach, and watermelon.

Consumers will begin seeing the new packaging options – including a two-count handle bag, three-count clamshell and two-count ReadyCycle packaging – in stores starting next month.

The organic artichoke packs will include a size 24 or 30 artichoke, depending on pack style.

“The new merchandise-ready artichokes are convenient for our retail partners and packed in quantities that shoppers have shared with us that they want to buy,” said Diana McClean, Ocean Mist’s senior director of marketing. “Plus, the packaging material used is both recyclable and made with recycled material.”

The clamshell packaging uses 90 percent recycled material, while the new two-count handle bag is made with High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), the most commonly recycled plastic. The new ReadyCycle corrugated clamshell is fully recyclable and uses vegetable-based inks.

Each pack also includes a simple preparation recipe and an easily scanned QR code linking to a “how-to” video on Ocean Mist’s website.
