U.S. grocery chain expands organic store concept

Publix opens first GreenWise Market in Georgia

Publix Super Markets, Inc., the largest U.S. employee-owned supermarket chain, said Wednesday it opened its first GreenWise Market – a 25,000-square-foot specialty, natural and organic store – in Georgia.

Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix operates about 1,200 stores, generating about $36 billion annually, in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

In 2017, Publix had announced a plan to “reignite” the GreenWise Market concept with a new store in Tallahassee, Fla., near Florida State University, which opened in October 2018.

A second store opened in Mount Pleasant, S.C., in May 2019, and a third GreenWise store opened in Mountain Brook, Ala., in June 2019.

Today, there are a total of seven GreenWise markets open for business. Stores in Odessa and Nocatee (Ponte Vedra), Fla., are also set to open this week.

Publix also currently sells organic and natural groceries under the GreenWise label, which it launched in 2003 “for those of us who pay extra attention to the types of food we put into our bodies on a daily basis.” (See video below).
